API integration FAQs

The questions we get asked on almost every first call.

How much does an API integration cost?

A straightforward two-system integration starts around [$9,000], and a custom public API around [$20,000]. Cost is driven by how well the systems are documented and how messy the existing data is, which the audit determines.

Can you integrate with a system that has no API?

Usually yes. Options include scheduled file exchange, database-level sync, or in some cases automated browser workflows. It is less elegant, but it still beats a person doing it by hand.

Why not just use Zapier or Make?

For low-volume, non-critical automations they are great and we will say so. Once an automation is business-critical or high volume, the lack of proper error handling, testing, and monitoring becomes expensive. That is when we recommend code.

What happens when a third-party API goes down?

We design for it. Failed operations queue and retry with backoff, writes are idempotent so nothing duplicates on retry, and your team gets alerted. The integration catches up automatically when the service returns.

How do you handle credentials and security?

Secrets live in a managed secret store, never in code. We use OAuth where available, apply least-privilege scopes, and rotate credentials. All traffic is encrypted and access is logged.

Can you fix integrations someone else built?

Yes, and it is a lot of what we do. We audit what exists, find the silent failures, and either repair or rebuild depending on which is genuinely cheaper over the next year.

Will we be able to maintain it ourselves?

We write a runbook covering how each integration works, what alerts mean, and how to replay failed events. Combined with a monitoring dashboard, most in-house teams handle day-to-day operation comfortably.
